Expedition Into Darkness Camp Upgrades
Facilities outlive every character — unlock them on purpose.
Characters in Expedition Into Darkness are temporary. The camp is not. Every successful extract should move Building Supplies, tools, and metals from a fragile body into facilities that unlock crafting recipes for the next courier. This page is the facility reference: what each station does, how the chain connects, and when to spend.
For decision framing and priority debates, use camp progression. For session basics, start with getting started. Loot only counts after you extract.
Why facilities beat attachment
Permadeath deletes carried gear. Unlocked benches and stashed reagents remain. Players who idolize one loadout and never deposit eventually donate that loadout to Fleshkin. Players who idolize the camp keep climbing after bad nights.
Treat the camp as your real character sheet:
- Stash = banked power (early space is tight — roughly a 10×25 grid in playtest notes)
- Facilities = skill tree
- Assembled weapons = temporary expressions of that tree
Antediluvian Interactive’s extraction loop (Steam 3126410, planned Q4 2026) is built around that split.
The facility chain
Exact costs can shift during playtests, but the logical spine stays stable:
Workbench
The battered founding table. Unlocks basic grips, shafts, and early toolcraft so weaponsmithing becomes real. Buy this first. Without Workbench, every later plan is fiction.
Workshop (from Workbench)
Jury-rigged utility and contraption space. Valuable for broader solutions — not a substitute for metal progression. Most beginners should not prioritize Workshop ahead of Ironworks.
Ironworks (from Workbench)
Early metal work. Ingot recipes (copper, iron, tin) and field tools that feed Forge. This is the combat economy unlock: better components mean cleaner fights against Goblins, Fleshkin, and Bonekin.
Forge (Workbench + Ironworks)
Hotter metal work and denser crafting. Unlock when you already hold reagents to use it — an empty Forge is vanity architecture.
Blacksmith (through Forge)
Serious weapon recipes and precious-metal handling. Often demands specialty tools (hammers, anvils) found or extracted on purpose. Treat those tools as named objectives on the extraction checklist.
Armoursmith (through Blacksmith)
Armor-focused sanctum for steel-tier protection crafts. A mid-progression milestone after your party extracts reliably in co-op (parties of 1–5).
Deep recipe behavior sits on crafting recipes. Loadout targets sit under builds and weapon crafting.
When to unlock each stage
| Stage | Unlock when… | Wait if… |
|---|---|---|
| Workbench | You have any serious Building Supplies | Never wait — fund it first |
| Ironworks | Workbench is online and you want metal kits | You somehow still lack Workbench |
| Workshop | Ironworks is productive and you need utility | You still cannot craft basic metal parts |
| Forge | Ironworks pays rent and reagents are banked | You would open it empty-handed |
| Blacksmith | Forge is used and specialty tools are secured | Your extracts are still inconsistent |
| Armoursmith | Blacksmith path is live and armor is the party goal | Weapons are still Workbench scraps |
This table is the practical companion to camp progression.
Building Supplies discipline
Building Supplies are the bottleneck resource. Rules that keep economies alive:
- Deposit supplies before celebrating cosmetics.
- Keep a labeled stash zone for facility reagents and tools.
- Do not “borrow” the last Forge stack for a revenge run after a wipe.
- Agree a party roadmap in co-op tips / party planner so nobody pockets the only hammer.
Sort loot and resources after every return. Stash Tetris is part of the upgrade path.
Match upgrades to the next five runs
Ask before spending:
- What weapon family are we standardizing in beginner builds?
- Which recipes are gated behind the next facility?
- Do we have stash space for outputs?
Example roadmaps:
- Reach-party plan: Workbench → Ironworks → Forge for spear/polearm component quality. Farm supplies on The Moor while practicing boat-wheel exits.
- Armor-scare plan: same metal spine with Armoursmith as the medium-term target after Blacksmith tools are banked.
- Utility plan: sprinkle Workshop after Ironworks — not before.
Region risk should rise with facility power. Do not expect Armoursmith comfort while learning Catacomb Ruins tunnels on day one. Use locations and extraction points so upgrade farming still ends in a live extract.
Field farming for unlocks
Plan expeditions around reagents, not vibes:
- Name the next facility.
- List missing Building Supplies, ingots, and specialty tools.
- Pick a region whose risk matches your kit (map).
- Leave when the reagent trigger hits — not when the map is “clear.”
Combat readiness scales with metalwork; swing accordingly (combat and controls). First-week players should stay on short loops from first expedition until Workbench and Ironworks are online.
Progression checklist
- Workbench online
- Stash sorted: supplies vs weapons vs junk
- Ironworks unlocked and used at least once
- Standard party kits rebuilt with new components
- Forge planned with reagents reserved
- Blacksmith/Armoursmith tools tracked as extract objectives
- Every successful run ends in deposit before queue
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Result | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping Workbench | No crafting loop | Fund it first |
| Workshop before metals | Cute tools, weak weapons | Ironworks priority |
| Unlocking Forge empty | Facility vanity | Farm reagents first |
| Carrying all supplies in-raid | Permadeath tax | Stash immediately |
| No party roadmap | Conflicting spends | Agree before spending |
Keep the loop tight: extract, deposit, unlock, craft, return. When patches land on the road to Q4 2026, re-check costs here and dated notes on the release timeline. Broader indexes sit in the wiki overview.
Invest in the camp like it is the only character that remembers you — because it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the first camp upgrade I should buy?
Workbench. It unlocks basic grips, shafts, and early toolcraft, and it is the foundation for every later facility path.
Should I unlock Workshop or Ironworks second?
Most beginners should favor Ironworks next for early ingot recipes and metal progression. Add Workshop after metal basics are online unless your party specifically needs utility crafts.
Do camp upgrades survive character death?
Yes. Facilities and stash contents persist. Only the dead character and items they carried are lost.
When should I push for Blacksmith or Armoursmith?
After Forge is productive and your group can reliably extract rarer tools and higher Building Supplies costs. Treat them as mid-progression milestones.
How do Building Supplies relate to upgrades?
Building Supplies fund facility unlocks. Stash them early, reserve them for the next planned bench, and avoid selling them for short-term comfort.
Where else should I read about camp timing?
Camp Progression covers decision order and mistakes. Crafting Recipes explains what each facility unlocks. Loot and Resources covers what to bring home.
