Expedition Into Darkness Chapel Ruins

Quiet stone that invites overstay — name the exit before the altar loot fills your bag.

Chapel Ruins Guide

Chapel Ruins is the playtest map that feels safest and kills parties with calm. In Expedition Into Darkness, the abandoned sanctuaries read like rare shelter: soft light, muted sound, and rooms that ask you to linger. Brother Edric called the chapel quiet but steadfast — then perished deeper in the same cursed grounds. Treat the region as a focused loot circuit with a hard leave, not a pilgrimage.

Read this with the map hub, locations, extraction points, and how to extract. Enemy pressure still belongs to the wider enemies index even when the stone feels holy.

What Chapel Ruins is for

Use Chapel Ruins when:

  • Your party (1–5) already extracts on habit from The Moor or has graduated Catacomb Ruins tunnel walks
  • You need a short, named objective — Red Thorn crate, otherworldly remains, plant reagents, or a boss-skull optional — not a full clear
  • You can recite primary and backup exits before the first chest

Do not pick Chapel Ruins because “it feels easier.” Quiet is the modifier. Overstay is the tax. New players should finish getting started and first expedition on open ground first.

Playtest map legend — how to read the markers

Community playtest maps use a consistent icon language. Memorize it before you drop:

MarkerMeaningRun habit
C (box)Random loot spawn; some rolls are footlockers, full chests, or emptyOpen only after exit scout
S (circle)Interactable leverAssign one lever lead; call pulls loud
Wooden crateRed Thorn Supply Box spawnPriority objective for brigade / Squire loops
AnvilSmall anvil spawnHeavy; plan bag space before you claim it
Orb with linesOtherworldly remainsHigh value, high temptation — leave trigger still wins
SkullBoss spawnOptional unless your bag trigger still has room
Potion / plantHemocanth and bitterbloom spawn spotsGrab on the leave path when slots allow

Some marked C spots are semi-random ground loot. Absence of a chest is not a bug — it is a reason to keep walking toward extract instead of searching forever.

Quiet sanctuaries and false safety

Chapel clusters reward focus and punish tourism. The audio lull hides the same Fleshkin rushes, Goblin packs, and Bonekin patrols that own other ruins (enemies, combat and controls). Candlelit rooms also encourage inventory Tetris at the worst time.

Rules that keep couriers alive:

  1. Scout extraction points — white flags, lever doors, remembered climbs — before the first altar chest.
  2. Set bag, injury, and time triggers stricter than on The Moor; calm stretches feel longer than they are.
  3. Fight near known retreat lanes, not in nave centers with three unknown doors.
  4. Skip boss skulls when bags already hold the Red Thorn crate or remains you came for.

Co-op groups should appoint an extract lead who ends “one more pew” debates (co-op tips, party planner).

Signature objectives

Red Thorn Supply Box

The wooden-box marker is the logistics prize. Red Thorn Brigade staging lore paints these grounds as a place where shadows waited longer than the deserters who stood watch. Treat the crate as a delivery mission: locate, secure a lane, extract. Do not circle the map “collecting atmosphere” afterward.

Small anvil

Anvils are quest- and crafting-adjacent weights. If Blacksmith or camp goals need one (camp upgrades, crafting recipes), assign a carrier and lighten someone else for revive duty. Drop novelty junk before you drop the anvil at the exit fight.

Otherworldly remains

The orb marker signals remains tied to darker alchemist threads and Squire-adjacent recovery stories. Value is high; corruption-flavored curiosity is higher. Pocket the objective, then leave — Empyrean tourism belongs to forbidden power theory, not mid-bag sightseeing.

Potion plants — hemocanths and bitterblooms

Plant marks are opportunistic. Sweep them on the way to extract when your leave path already passes the spawn. Dedicated plant farming that opens new wings after a full bag is how quiet chapels earn wipe stories.

Levers (S) and loot (C)

Levers open paths, side gates, or extract-enabling states — same language as other regions (locations). One player tracks which S marks are pulled. C loot is burst value; open after the door home is known, never as the first verb of the run.

Suggested chapel loops

Loop A — First chapel extract

  1. Enter with a finished kit from beginner builds or builds.
  2. Touch primary and backup extracts.
  3. Take one C cluster plus any plant on the leave line.
  4. Extract on the first trigger. Run the extraction checklist out loud.

Loop B — Red Thorn delivery

  1. Name the wooden-box spawn as the only win condition.
  2. Ignore optional skulls unless the crate is already secured and bags are light.
  3. Rotate immediately if Goblins own the primary door (enemies).

Loop C — Remains / anvil objective

  1. Confirm stash space and carrier roles before queue.
  2. Cap the run at the objective plus reagents that fit without delaying leave.
  3. Deposit into camp before anyone suggests a victory lap (camp progression, loot and resources).

Chapel Ruins reward parties that treat sacred stone like a vault heist: enter with a list, speak lever calls, and leave through a door you already touched. For region planning, return to map and locations. For the leave workflow, stay glued to extraction points and how to extract. The chapel will always offer one more quiet room. Your job is to remember which door still leads home.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Chapel Ruins safer than The Moor?

No. Quiet sanctuaries encourage overstay. Confirm extraction points first and leave when your bag, injury, or time trigger hits — calm is not a difficulty setting.

What do C and S markers mean on the playtest map?

C marks random loot spawns (chests, footlockers, or ground loot). S marks interactable levers. Scout exits before opening C clusters, and assign one player to track lever pulls.

Where does the Red Thorn Supply Box spawn?

At the wooden crate marker on the Chapel Ruins playtest map. Treat it as a delivery objective: secure the crate, keep a leave lane, and extract instead of clearing every side room.

What spawn at potion plant marks?

Hemocanths and bitterblooms. Grab them when your extract path already passes the spot; do not open new wings for plants after your leave trigger fires.

Should we fight every boss skull in the chapel?

Only if bags still have room under your leave trigger. Boss skulls are optional power spikes that become wipe magnets when you already carry the crate, anvil, or remains you came for.
