Expedition Into Darkness Extraction Points
Exits are objectives — scout them before the bag gets heavy.
An extraction point is the only scoreboard that matters in Expedition Into Darkness. Kill counts fade. Deep clears fade. If your character dies, carried loot dies with them. The camp stash is safe only after you leave through a known exit. This page covers general extract discipline: how to find exits, how white flags and levers fit the language of leave, and how to run a checklist so greed does not improvise your ending.
Deep region notes live on The Moor, Catacomb Ruins, and locations. The full mindset guide is how to extract. Printable flow: extraction checklist.
Extraction as a delivery mission
Reframe every expedition:
- Courier = your character
- Package = inventory
- Destination = extraction point → camp stash
- Failure = any ending that is not a live deposit
Antediluvian Interactive’s medieval co-op extraction looter (Steam 3126410, planned Q4 2026) is built on that cruelty. Parties of 1–5 win by agreeing when the delivery is “good enough.”
Scout exits before loot
Before the first chest:
- Open region notes in the map hub.
- Name a primary and backup extract.
- Walk or eyeball the approach while bags are still light.
- Set leave triggers: bag threshold, injury rule, or real-time limit.
On The Moor, boat wheels make exits memorable — use that clarity to practice the habit. In Catacomb Ruins, tunnels hide approaches; mark them mentally while you still have stamina and healing margin.
Players who loot first and “find the exit later” are writing a tragedy with better props.
White flags and visual exit language
Playtest communication often treats white flags (and similar high-contrast markers) as the readable “this way out” signal. Practical habits:
- Call flag sightings in voice immediately.
- Do not assume every flag is currently usable — confirm the path is not lever-locked or enemy-owned.
- When two flags are visible, assign primary/backup before anyone fills the last slots.
- On the leave, move toward the flag you already verified, not the prettier one you never touched.
Flags do not extract you. Walking to a safe, prepared exit does.
Levers as extract infrastructure
Levers frequently gate paths, drain floods, or open the final approach. Treat them as part of the extract kit:
- Appoint a lever lead in co-op (party planner, co-op tips).
- Track which levers are pulled; stranded teammates on the wrong side of a gate cause panic splits.
- After a lever changes the map, re-verify the white-flag approach before celebrating.
- Never pull experimental levers while overloaded “for fun.”
On the Moor, levers and boat wheels combine into readable puzzles. Underground, a wrong gate can add minutes you do not have.
Exit combat rules
The deadliest fights are exit fights. Enemies that were optional become blockers when bags are full:
- Spend stamina on space, not on distant stragglers (combat and controls).
- If Goblins (grenadiers, ogres) own the doorway, rotate to backup extract.
- Fleshkin chases on open approaches punish hesitation — leave earlier than your pride wants.
- Bonekin tunnels punish overstay with slow inevitability — your trigger must fire sooner.
- Do not open new rooms while walking out.
Enter the leave with a finished kit from builds or beginner builds, not three unfinished experiments. Mid-run crafting fantasies belong at camp (crafting recipes).
What to carry through the exit
Prioritize what funds the camp:
- Building Supplies and facility tools (camp upgrades)
- Ingots and recipe parts you can use soon (loot and resources)
- One reliable weapon — dump duplicate experiments
If slots are tight at the flag, drop junk on the ground. A lighter living courier beats a museum corpse. After return, deposit before queueing (camp progression).
Extraction checklist (run every drop)
Use this alongside the dedicated extraction checklist tool page:
- Primary extract named
- Backup extract named
- Lever state understood (if relevant)
- Leave triggers agreed (bag / injury / time)
- Extract lead appointed in co-op
- Reagent goal listed (or “training extract”)
- On trigger: collapse to one route, no new wings
- On return: stash deposit before celebration
New players should chain this with getting started and short Moor loops from first expedition.
Region-specific reminders
| Region | Extract focus |
|---|---|
| The Moor | Boat wheels, lever floods, basin staging — best classroom |
| Catacomb Ruins | Longer walks, stricter triggers, choke awareness |
| Chapel / mixed sites | Quiet false safety; confirm approach before altar loot (locations) |
Common extraction failures
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Never looked for flags/exits | Scout extract first |
| Party democracy at the door | One extract lead |
| Fighting optional elites while heavy | Rotate to backup |
| Pulling mystery levers overloaded | Interact light, leave heavy |
| Skipping stash deposit | Deposit is part of the extract |
Extraction is a skill. Train it like combat. The ruins will always invent a reason to stay — white flags, levers, and a written checklist are how you refuse. For economy after success, return to the items hub. For atmosphere and routes, stay in the map hub. Dated milestones: release timeline, wiki overview.
Find the flag. Trust the backup. Leave.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When should I extract?
As soon as your pre-set bag, injury, or time trigger hits. If you are debating while overloaded at a white flag, you are already late — take the verified exit.
What are white flags for?
They are high-contrast exit markers used in playtest communication. Call them when spotted, verify the path is open, and move to the flag you already confirmed — not a prettier untested one.
How do levers affect extraction?
Levers often open paths, alter flooding, or enable the final approach. Appoint a lever lead, track pulls, and re-check the exit route after any map change.
Does loot stay if I die near the exit?
No. Death removes the character and carried items regardless of distance to extraction. Only the camp stash is safe after a successful leave.
Where is the printable extraction checklist?
Use the Extraction Checklist tool page together with this guide and How to Extract. Run the checklist before every queue until the habits stick.
Should my party split to cover two exits?
Scouting can split briefly. The final leave should regroup on one extract unless a backup rotation was planned. Split leaves create isolated deaths.
